Past Future-ism | The Metropolis

The idea of producing human by using robot replacement was some kind of modern typical thought that it would help the eternity of human life, working instead of real human, medication, and sometimes to eliminate racism. Refer to post world war, the happening of industrialize idea where people could live life easier by the rules teen that been fix since before the day one man born. How could human have a standard perfect life as much as having mass production in every house hold. During Industrial age, people in America believed if you have a family stay in a house in suburb area with nice car and television, a man working at the office in town, woman work at home to do house work and take care of children. Does this type of though really fit the basic need of our life. Indeed, people can live in it but did they satisfied with the choices they have?
–‘The Metropolis’ the film of the silent-film era has become a sort of holy grail to people who adore this movie. It is the most iconic silent picture of its day, because of the visual representation and ideal the story contains. In the film, the metropolis is home to Utopian society where its wealthy residents live a carefree life. Freder Frederson is one of those. One day he spots a beautiful women with a group of children, she and children who quickly disappear. Trying to follow her, he found such a horrified place under the ground, the world of workers. Those people apparently run the machinery which keep the above ground, Utopian world functioning. The founder is his father ‘Joh Frederson’. He eventually keep this secret away from his son. Freder learn that women is Maria who desire to join the “hand” : the worker , to the “Head” : the people above, by a mediator of the “Heart”. Freder want to help those worker to live a better life by insist his father dictatorship and walk his own path.–
In the future, we could say the film depict two type of human, one is the thinker who plan everything but does not know how things work, and the worker who do a hard job but does not know how to make plan. When one man combine both Thinker and worker together into oneself, could create a better future of humanity where the equality increase it level or the human value that eliminate by the classes.

The film related directly to Modernism of which has turn the century into new era. When
Mass production about to be the major role in society. It questioning by the value of human. Going toward the Post-Modernism where the value of nature become more significant, the unity or sameness in human standard become apart to each person. this is where the modernist that set standard of people had failed.
“Metropolis features special effects and set designs that still impress modern audiences with their visual impact – the film contains cinematic and thematic links to German Expressionism, though the architecture as portrayed in the film appears based on contemporary Modernism and Art Deco. The latter, a brand-new style in Europe at the time, had not reached mass production yet and was considered an emblem of the bourgeois class, and similarly associated with the ruling class in the film.”
– Film criticizer from ‘the Metropolis’.

Metropolis involve strongly in Architecture of the time, reveal buildings of sharp angle, great height, and crowded environments, such as the frequently shown Tower of Babel in Fritz Lang’s Metropolis. It is the evidenced German expressionism when artist try to put deep meaning into film and any art pieces, the time during World war. Trying represent the darkness inside people mind at that time, this film purposely rework the intrinsically modern problems of self-reflexivity, spectacle and identity. So called in critiques, “German Expressionism: A Cinematic/Cultural Problem”, focusing on the “power of spectacles” and offers audiences “a kind of metonymic image of the own situation”.
